Green candidates for Brentwood elections standing on platform for urgent Council reform

21 April 2022

Brentwood Borough Council town hall

Brentwood & Chelmsford Green Party will be standing candidates in three wards in the Brentwood Borough Council elections next month.

John Hamilton will be standing in Brentwood North, Anne Milward in Shenfield, and Greg Ince in Warley.

Brentwood Council isn’t working. It needs urgent reform. The Council is riddled with ‘Punch & Judy‘ style politics where point-scoring is deemed more important than finding workable solutions to pressing issues. The election of Green councillors would see the introduction of truly independent voices, not whipped ‘yes men and women’ - hard-working councillors who would serve and listen to their communities.

Green councillors would put environmental protection and social justice at the heart of their efforts. Putting a Green in the chamber would ensure that the climate emergency and protecting green spaces are issues that are no longer ignored.

We would campaign to:

  • Begin the process of bringing key services back ’in house’, rather than the current arrangement where services are hived out to other local authorities
  • Introduce a scheme to build affordable eco-friendly homes for rent. Ensure that contractors building new properties meet the highest environmental standards. Too many young people who grow up in the Borough are forced out by the lack of affordable accommodation
  • Give our children clean air. Our council needs to work with Essex County Council to ensure that every child has a safe journey to school. Clean Air Zones need to be created around schools. Regular monitoring of air quality should take place with safe cycle and walking routes available across the borough.

Greens if elected would work to improve services. We would extend recycling at kerbside and at other locations and establish re-use and repair shops. We would level up the distribution of resources, tackling the imbalance that exists between the town and the parished areas.

Our green spaces and countryside needs protecting, it’s what makes Brentwood an attractive place to live.

Finally we would aim to reinvigorate Brentwood town centre, attracting independent shops, to make it a place residents and visitors want to visit.
